Kaj so trajnostne skupnosti in zakaj njim posvečamo dan?

(Please find the English translation from Slovenian below.)

Kar stoji skupaj, traja, in kar traja, stoji skupaj.

Voda povezuje ves svet.

What are sustainable communities and why do we dedicate a day to them?

What stands together lasts, and what lasts stands together. Yes, yes, I know, change is the only constant in this world, and yet life on Earth has been increasingly standing together over billions of years. Until the “smart” humans emerged and we ended where we are today.

There can not be “smart” people if there are no genuinely smart people; uniting the latter is our driving force in organizing the European Day of Sustainable Communities. Despite the folly, ignorance, and even insanity that we witness in the world today (or precisely because of them!), various groups calling for common sense (we prefer to call them communities) are growing like mushrooms after rain.

Here and there, articles pop up in the media about such smart initiatives but these are merely drops in the ocean. We need at least one day a year, we thought to ourselves at the ECOLISE network, that we dedicate entirely to smart action for a better world. A lot of water will flow down Slovenian rivers into the oceans before this day is formally recognized at the national and EU level, but what matters more to us is that this day is recognized by all of you who are not idly standing by.

This is especially important this year. Water that flows through Slovenia towards the Adriatic and the Black Sea is being so polluted by “smart” ideas, that the people united and rebelled. We believe we don’t need to remind anyone of the referendum on July 11. It goes without saying that you’ll be there. European Day for Sustainable Communities invites you to join us two months later – in the week before and the week after 18 September 2021. We invite you to organize local events, register them on our website and show how much you care about water (or whatever else matters to your community, of course!).

Winning at the referendum does not mean that everything will be fine and dandy just because of that. Sludge pollution will continue to occur, chemicals will leak from factories, appetites for the construction of facilities on the banks of rivers, lakes and the sea will live on.

Water connects the whole world. Today’s rain was a river in Africa a few days ago, or oak blood in the south of France, snow in the Siberian steppes … tomorrow it will be at the source of the Soča river, in Lake Bled and your neighbour’s well.

Caring for water is like caring for the blood of the Earth. We believe you are already doing something in the direction of this concern. So invite your neighbours, friends, like-minded people. Share with them your ideas, challenges and successes on the European Day of Sustainable Communities on 18 September 2021. If we work together, our successes will be more pervasive and there may be hope that smart ideas will one day just displace the “smart” ones.

More information about the event can be found on our website and Facebook page, but you can also write to us at trajnostne.skupnosti@gmail.com.
