“The Long Forgotten Road’ and what is Ecocide?
September 25, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm UTC+0

Fridays for Future Windhoek invites you all to join our Press Event at 2-3 PM on Friday 25 September, 2020 at the Franco Namibian Cultural Center in Windhoek, Namibia and virtually on zoom.
The briefing celebrates the video launch of ‘The Long Forgotten Road,’ by Scilla Hess, a song written to raise awareness on the ecocide law campaign, which is advocating for Ecocide to become an International Crime.
The recent announcement of a new oil and gas operation in Namibia’s Kavango Regions, the nation’s breadbasket and part of the world-renowned Kavanago Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area are a perfect example of Ecocide.
We are very worried about this climate poisoning and unsustainable extraction plan on the sensitive, biodiverse and fertile northwestern Kavango regions in Namibia, its ecosystems like Okavango River, our people and their livelihoods.

Ellie Wyatt from Eco Action Families co-wrote the Long Forgotten Road with international world musician Jonathan Owusu-Yianomah and swiss singer Scilla Hess, the voice behind this beautiful piece.

Why is the Ecocide law so important in Namibia? We will talk about the collaboration and why ecocide should be recognized as an international crime. Learn more about this here.
Why Now?
The recent news of drilling operations going ahead in Kavango East and West by the Canadian company Recon Africa requires an urgent response. . Although the EIA that the company lodged talks of an “exploration” level of drilling in just a few test sites, the company’s marketing materials suggest that approvals are in place to proceed with conventional and unconventional (fracking) drilling and the extraction of petroleum. Particularly worrisome is that Recon Africa has hired “The Father Of Fracking” Nick Steinsberger, to run this drilling operation.
Key speakers include, Ina-Maria Shikongo from FFFWHK, Scilla Hess and Ellie Wyatt and a few children who partook in the video. Special invites will be Rosa Namises, Maxi Lewis Director of NACSO, Dr. Annette Huebschle and Mr. Jeffrey Barbee, moderated by Che Ulenga.
Only the press will be invited to the briefing along with our young activists, whilst the public will be able to stream it live from, FFFWHK and FNCC .
