TraMe: storie di stoffa. Incominciamo

September 25 @ 4:00 pm - 7:30 pm CEST

Free

We’re a small group of people, coming from north of Italy, Brescia. Our association is called “Movimento per la Decrescita Felice” and we’d like to begin a cooperation with other local realities, such as “Emergency Brescia”, “Casa del Quartiere” and “Associazione di Via Milano” to promote informations and debate about period poverty in our urban areas. In order to fullfill this aim, helping to build a more regenerative, just, and inclusive world, we join the Network for the European Day of Sustainable Communities with an event scheduled at the end of September, the 25Th. The “what” of the project? The idea initially is of course to bring the topic of menstruation to the level of the community, working on two levels:

● Disclosure/awareness: the first way to break a taboo is to talk about it, first and foremost among women and girls. It is essential to share individual and cultural experiences and points of view, as well as information on health, wellbeing and sustainability (making alternatives known).
● Self-production of washable sanitary napkins: the idea is to create together reusable products that can replace disposable ones, to be distributed in solidarity and/or on offer. During the event, after the debate, we organize a coworking space open to the citizenship so that anyone can see and try with us.

In this way, as a community, we could respond to different needs: socio-economic vulnerabilities, enrivonmental awareness, women empowerment, and also testify the impacts. Such as, how does the attention on this issue impact, on a cultural, social and political level.
Through horizontal participation, we would like to be promoters of change in the choices of consumption of a basic need that here in Italy is very expansive, and the truffle is even cheaper. Another aspect, no less important, is the type of relationships that can arise around our workshop of self-production tailoring: training, skills to be put or re-put into play, in a circular way.

The project wants to be an initial experiment to lighten and nourish the associations that work with us on inclusion. So among the objectives we have, which have recently been discussed, is the deconstruction of the dominant narrative. Our micro-stories can give weight to the construction of a model of interpretation of the world that includes action. Our strategy involves leaving time and giving time, especially for women, without any kind of discrimination. If to educate is to work together, it transforms both, which is why it will be important to maintain practices that are generative of new responsibilities, one of the ways in which we introduce the past that blocks. And the model of craft production is based on personal creativity, so being co-responsible and teaching to be so, by doing, is already art, it happens. Even if we take it for granted in our daily lives.

Indeed, we would like to organise for this occasion a kick-off event for the project, involving several volunteers of the circle but also different local realities that collaborate with us. In that case, if it would be possible to carry out the activities in presence, we would also opt for amix in online and offline event. So that this event will be aimed at all those who want to approach the topic of menstruation in a critical-active way, in order to find but above all to disseminate ecological and economical solutions to what is an absolutely physiological need. It is therefore mainly aimed at those women who, for socio-economic reasons, find it difficult to approach the world of eco-menstruation, but not only.
We believe that menstruation (and eco-menstruation) is a universal theme that everyone should be aware of. or This will logically be followed by a space for sharing with the participants, also because the assumption is that the structure may change over time according to the degree of involvement of the participants in the project, and it is good to start opening the doors in a transparent but respectful way.
Finally, we would propose an introduction to the tailoring workshop for the production of washable sanitary towels, run by a number of people who will have the opportunity to teach and learn again. We would like to re-propose these events, setting some meetings of workshop production according to the times and spaces chosen by the associations.

Finally, as said before, of course we would like to hold the meeting in presence, if it is not possible in a closed place, even outdoors; alternatively we could organise an introductory webinar on the theme, with the condition of a documentary centred on the theme on which to reflect together. It is called “Period. End of Sentence.” and you may find it in youtube, if you want to watch it ; )
Thanks for the attention!
